She inclined her head slightly as if coming out of a small, soft walls down private moment. “I can’t wait. I’ll try making her muffins again.” Sophia smiled and let take the hand from her, watching him gather the plates.

“Maybe another one of those to save for lunch tomorrow.” She mused and chuckled. “I’ll have to learn how to make deli sandwiches now.”

“She’ll like that.”

Sal motioned to a younger man behind the counter to come and take the plates, which he does with an air of excitement. “‘ey, can ya have Paulie put together an extra for later? Thanks, kiddo.” He tucked a $20 bill into the kid’s apron before he went on his way. Several minutes later, the boy returned with a sandwich wrapped in butcher paper. “Thanks again,” Sal said with kindness.

“So, you wanna ride home?”

Sophia nodded at Sal’s offer and moved to stand up. “A ride home would be wonderful.” She gathered her bag from her seat and then smoothed down her skirt gently.

“So long as it’s not out of your way.” She said and smiled. “I know you’re always busy with something.”

“‘s never outta my way ta take ya home, Soph’.” With that, Sal rose from his seat and waved a hand at the others occupying the delicatessen. “Let’s get goin’.”

((Woah, I had some incomplete words in my last post. Let’s just fix that quick))

Sophia placed a hand over his, her fingers tracing long the bone structure there. “She wouldn’t bother me. It would much like when I was very young taking care of the palace children.” She said softly, just loud enough for him to hear. Her gaze moved from their hands up to his gaze.

“I’d like to come over soon. Maybe have a picnic in the yard instead.” She smiled softly.

“Soon’d be fine. Tha yard sounds a lot safer fer now, at least ‘til Izzy gets used to ya. She’s always been real grabby ‘round new people. Always gotta learn more about a person, yanno? It goes away after a few visits,” Sal commented with a sagely nod. “How ‘bout we meet up again in a few days?”

She smiled softly and picked up his hand and pressed a kiss into the palm of it. “A few days would be lovely.” Sophia murmured as she now held his hand in hers from across the table.

“I’m…I’m really glad she enjoys my company.” A truly warm smile crossed her lips.

The kiss was rather surprising on Sal’s end, although he didn’t let that show. He smiled and gave a nod. “I’ll haveta call ya later or tomorrow to see what days word fer us.”

“Well, we both do.”

A moment passed before Sal gently withdrew his hand to stack their plates. “Hm…are ya wanting anythin’ else? Somethin’ ta take home?”

She closed her eyes and inhaled as the food came out. Her stomached growled almost audible to those near her, which made her flush lightly. Sophia nodded to the man as he bowed and she watched him walk off. Her hands moved to pick up one of the quarters and held it judgmentally in her hands.

“Oooh, mmmm, this is a very large sandwich.” She said chuckling softly, she attempted to take a lady like bite, but it seemed impossible for a sandwich of this size. After the first bite she lifted her hand, palm side toward her lips as if to hide the size of the bite she had gotten. Beneath it all, though, she hummed contently at the taste of the food.

He smiled slightly. “Yeah, he makes ‘em real good. Enjoy it, yeah?” Sal began to eat. After a while he finished his meal and leaned back with a sigh of approval. “Damn, don’t get much better’n that.” Sal looked at Sophia. “How you farin’ with that?”

Sophia finished the food not long after he did. She dabbed her mouth some with a napkin and smiled. “That was some of the best food I’ve had all week. Thank you, really.” She said setting her napkin on her plate.

Giving him a few moments she leaned forward, resting her arms on the table. “How’s the Princess?” She asked as she wondered how to form any of her other questions.

“‘s no problem, I’m glad ta share ‘em with the world. These bastards make the best damn sandwiches in the city,” Sal said with a laugh. Sophia’s question kept a faint crack of the smile on his face. “She’s doin’ fine. Wonderin’ when the “Pretty Kitty“‘s comin’ back, heh.”

“When will she be allowed back?” Sophia asked, half teasing, but there was some uneasy her those elegant features. “I’ve been with so much unease since that day. I may be a monster, or a pretty kitty, but I wouldn’t even harm Izzy or you, I have more self control than that….I would harm someone I love…”

Sal chuckled loudly and leaned forward, placing a hand gently on Sophia’s forearm. “She c’n come back whenever she wants. I know ya’d never hurt either of us. If anythin’, I’m worried ‘bout Izzy botherin’ the hell outta you, yanno?” A large smile sat on his face.

Sophia followed along, keeping her head down, a soft blush tinting her cheeks at the small compliment. A soft thanks came from her lips as she slid into the chair and tucked some of her hair behind an ear. At the question, she inclined her head looked at him.

“I guess so. Though I no longer am at my job, it seems almost a blessing. I don’t really need the money, just something to do during the day. I think this has been one of the few days I’ve been out since…” She absently rolled a shoulder.

“I’ve missed you, Sal.” She said, her honey gold eyes dropping to the table.

“Heh, yeah. Still sorry ‘bout that, by tha way,” he mentioned. “I, uh, missed ya too, Soph’.”

A few moments passed and the man named Paulie came out with sandwiches, each about the size of a human head; they were cut into fourths so they were manageable. “Christ, Paulie, smells fantastic. Thanks.” The man smiled, made a small polite bow toward Sophia, then went back to work.

“Eat up,” Sal said. “‘f yer still hungry, we c’n get more ‘r we c’n get ya some ta go.”

Sophia had gotten dressed and presentable the best she could and made her way down to the deli. Nerves had been pushed away after a quick talk with herself in the mirror. It was just Sal, nothing was different, or atleast she hoped.

She turned the corner to the Deli and stood infront of it a moment. Honey eyes glancing from one side to the other before heading inside. Standing off to the side, she waved off a server and looked around, seeing if Sal was already here or not. Her hands wrung lightly, gaze slightly cast down as she waited.

When Sal entered the Deli, it wasn’t from the front entrance. In fact, Sal came in through the swinging kitchen door. A man in an apron followed behind Sal with fresh cuts of beef to display in the cases stretching across the length of the shop. He set his gaze on Sophia and approached her with a slight upturn to the corners of his mouth. “‘Ey, how ya doin’, Sophia? Hungry?”

She blinked lightly at the man as he came out from the kitchen. Her lips turned into a polite smile and she took a step towards him. “I’m doing well, and yes, quite. How are you, Sal?” She asked, shifting weight to her other foot before, almost hesitantly hooking her arm in his.

“Doin’ fine now that yer here. C’mon, have a seat.” Sal gestured to a small table nearby before walking to it and pulling out the chair for her. He took his place on the other side of the round table but before he did, he called to the man over the counter. “‘Ey, Paulie, we’ll have two a’ yer best, yeah? Make ‘em both pork.”

With the order taken care of, Sal turned his attention to Sophia. “So ya been all right after that whole thing?” he asked with a bit of concern bubbling up without his noticing.
